سرگذشت حاجی‌بابای اصفهانی و چهار پرسش جنجال‌برانگیز

رمان سرگذشت حاجی‌بابای اصفهانی و دنبالۀ آن سرگذشت حاجی بابای اصفهانی در انگلستان از تاثیرگذارترین رمان‌های اجتماعی پیش از مشروطه به شمار می‌رود که همواره در کانون توجه محققان بوده است. این توجهات عمدتاً ناشی از جنجال‌ها و ابهاماتی  است که  پیرامون این دو اثر پدید آمده است. تحقیق حاضر می کوشد تا ضمن ارزیابی اهم پژوهش‌های مرتبط، برای ابهامات موجود پاسخ‌هایی مستدل ارائه کند. روش این مطالعه از نوع توصیفی-تحلیلی است و پس از شناسایی و بررسی پیشینه، پرسش‌های موجود پیرامون این اثر در چهار حوزه دسته‌بندی شده‌اند: 1. محتوا و اهداف، 2. اصالت متن، 3.شخصیت‌پردازی 4. ترجمه و مترجم. تحلیل‌ها بیانگر این است که از نظر محتوا، رمان سرگذشت حاجی‌بابای اصفهانی -با وجود اهداف پیدا و پنهان استعماری-مورد استقبال جامعه قرار گرفت. این امر نشان می‌دهد ایرانیان آن را متنی صرفاً غرض‌آلود در نظر نگرفتند و به منزلۀ بازنمایی اغراق‌آمیزی از آسیب‌های اجتماعی و فرهنگی نیز تلقی کرده‌اند. پیرامون اصالت متن، گرچه همچنان فرضیۀ وجود متن اصلی فارسی مطرح است اما به دلیل وجود تکنیک‌های پیکارسکی، اصالت انگلیسی آن پذیرفتنی‌تر است. البته به احتمال بسیار، موریه از دست‌نوشته‌های فارسی نیز بهره برده ‌است. در خصوص شخصیت‌پردازی، نویسنده از تکنیک مونتاژ استفاده کرده و شخصیت‌ها، تصویری  برساخته از کارگزاران واقعی دورۀ قاجار هستند که موریه عمدتاً صورتی هجوآمیز از آن‌ها ارائه داده است. در باب ابهامات پدید آمده پیرامون ترجمۀ جلد اول، مترجم این اثر، میرزا حبیب اصفهانی با دخل و تصرف گسترده در متن اصلی، آن را به یک اثر برجستۀ ضداستعماری و استبدادی برای تنویر افکار عمومی بدل کرده است.

the adventures of hajji baba of ispahan and its sequel, hajji baba of ispahan in england, are considered among the most influential social novels written before the iranian constitutional revolution. these works have consistently attracted scholarly attention, largely because of the controversies and ambiguities surrounding them. besides evaluating the significance of the research about the novel, the present study seeks to provide well-reasoned responses to the existing ambiguities. this research employs a descriptive-analytical methodology. after identifying and reviewing the background literature, the questions surrounding the novel are categorized into four thematic areas: (1) content and purpose, (2) textual authenticity, (3) characterization, and (4) translation and translator. in terms of content, despite the novel's overt and covert colonial objectives, the adventures of hajji baba was widely welcomed by iranian readers. this indicates that the work has not been merely perceived as a biased or propagandistic text. the readers interpreted it as an exaggerated representation of iran's socio-cultural problems. regarding authenticity, while the hypothesis of an original persian manuscript remains, the use of picaresque narrative techniques and the absence of conclusive evidence make the english origin of the text more credible. nonetheless, morier probably benefited from his persian-language notes and manuscripts in constructing the narrative. as for characterization, the author employed a montage technique. the characters are fictional composites modeled after real qajar-era officials, whom morier often depicted satirically, reflecting his personal bias. concerning the ambiguities surrounding the translation of the first volume, the translator, mirza habib, extensively edited and reworked the original text. in doing so, he transformed it into a distinguished anti-colonial and anti-despotic literary work to raise public awareness in the qajar era
