Abstract
natural ventilation is one of the key factors in improving thermal comfort and environmental quality of indoor spaces of traditional buildings. the present study investigates the role of surface and height proportions of the central courtyard in traditional houses of bandar kong, located in the hot and humid climate of the persian gulf, in improving the flow and quality of natural ventilation. for this purpose, case studies were designed based on the length-to-width ratio of the courtyard (l/w) and the height-to-width ratio of the courtyard (h/w) and analyzed in a computational fluid dynamics (cfd) simulation environment. the average air velocity, air age, and ventilation efficiency indices were selected as the main criteria for the study. the results showed that increasing the length-to-width ratio of the courtyard reduces the air flow velocity in indoor spaces and courtyards, but increases the air age and improves ventilation efficiency; so that the air flow moves slower and more concentrated and the overall ventilation of the spaces improves. on the other hand, increasing the height of the surrounding buildings generally reduced the air velocity and ventilation efficiency and increased the air flow persistence, indicating the limiting role of building height on natural air flow. comparison of the results of the samples with the reference sample showed that observing the optimal geometric proportions of the courtyard can improve the performance of natural ventilation and lead to an efficient design pattern in this climate. this study emphasizes the importance of properly designing the geometric proportions of the courtyard and the surrounding height of the buildings and shows that by applying these principles, natural ventilation of traditional houses in bandar kong can be brought to the desired level without the need for mechanical systems. the findings can be used as an optimal model for building design in hot and humid climates and provide practical guidance for architects and designers in renovating or designing similar houses.
