modeling the behavior of frozen soil under freeze/thaw cycles with emphasis on depth and temperature change rate parameters

Abstract    the present study investigates the mechanical behavior of frozen soils subjected to freeze/thaw cycles using the ghoreishian amiri (2016) constitutive model. employing the finite element method in the plaxis software،this research analyzes the effects of key parameters،including sample depth and temperature change rate،on the volumetric response of the soil. the results indicate that the soil exhibits a complex behavioral pattern during thermal cycles،consisting of initial elastic contraction،frost heave due to ice segregation،and plastic consolidation during the thawing phase. the findings reveal that surface layers experience more severe strain variations compared to intermediate depths،and increasing the duration of thermal cycles leads to a reduction in heave amplitude and an increase in residual settlement. the adopted model،which is based on the theory of solid phase stress and cryogenic suction،successfully simulates the nonlinear behavior of the soil under various thermal conditions. the outcomes of this study can serve as a reliable basis for geotechnical designs in cold regions and the development of future numerical models. the obtained results highlight the importance of considering the effects of depth and temperature change rates in assessing the stability of structures built on frost susceptible soils.
