assessing the restriction of prophetic call to tawḥīd al-ulūhiyyah: an examination of muḥammad ibn 'abd al-wahhāb's viewpoint

Abstract    the call of the divine prophets and the subject of their message are among the important issues in islam that have long been the focus of discourse among islamic scholars. muḥammad ibn 'abd al-wahhāb, by emphasizing the issue of tawḥīd al-'ibādah (oneness of worship), restricted the subject of the prophetic call to tawḥīd al-ulūhiyyah (oneness of divinity). relying on certain quranic verses, such as verse 36 of surah an-nahl, he considers the primary problem of the prophets' communities to be merely the worship of other than allāh and regards the purpose of sending prophets and divine scriptures as the elimination of shirk (polytheism). accordingly, he bases the criterion of being a monotheist or a polytheist solely on tawḥīd in worship. with an un-quranic outlook and by accusing others of legislating besides allāh (tashrī' min dūn allāh), he deems muslims to be polytheists, while considering the polytheists of the prophets' era as monotheists in tawḥīd al-rubūbiyyah (oneness of lordship).this research, using a descriptive-analytical method, examines and critiques this viewpoint, demonstrating that this belief contradicts the quranic verses, opposes the prophetic tradition (sunnah), and contradicts the statements of islamic thinkers who have established various types of tawḥīd in the call of the prophets. these include the call to tawḥīd al-dhātī (oneness of essence), the call to tawḥīd al-rubūbiyyah, the call to the legislative lordship of almighty god, and the call to establishing social order and justice. furthermore, the polytheists during the prophets' era ascribed acts of lordship to their idols and, in addition to the polytheism of worship (shirk al-'ibādah), also held polytheistic beliefs regarding lordship (shirk al-rubūbiyyah) and essence (shirk al-dhātī). therefore, the monotheistic call of the prophets was not only to negate divinity (ulūhiyyah) for other than allāh, but also to negate divine and lordly attributes from anything other than allāh.
