|
The reliability and efficiency of gearboxes in industrial applications are critical, as improper maintenance can lead to severe operational failures. this study examines a specific case involving a gearbox in the steel industry, where inadequate maintenance contributed to its inoperability immediately after startup. utilizing sound analysis and signal processing techniques, a problem with the output shaft is identified, ultimately confirmed through a stop and inspection, which revealed a false brinelling failure mode affecting the gears. the damage was primarily caused by the gearbox operating in a high-vibration environment, leading to significant wear between the gear teeth. these findings emphasize the necessity for corrective solutions, which may include gear modification or replacement, given the severity of failure. the associated costs highlight the importance of implementing robust maintenance protocols to enhance gearbox longevity and operational reliability. this paper underscores the critical role of acoustic diagnostics as an effective tool for the detection of gearbox issues, ultimately preventing costly subsequent failures.
