واکاوی نقش استعاره در علوم تجربی

یکی از مهم‌ترین بینش‌های معاصر در قلمرو فلسفه علم، نقشِ محوریِ استعاره در تفکر علمی است. استعاره در گذشته نه‌تنها در علوم تجربی جایگاهی بنیادی نداشت، بلکه حتی به باور بسیاری از دانشمندان گمراه‌کننده نیز بود؛ ولی از دهه 1960 به بعد نگاه‌ها تغییر کرد و استعاره از امری طُفیلی و زینت‌بخش به امری ضروری و معرفت‌بخش تغییر یافت تا جایی که برخی فیلسوفان علم معتقدند علم ذاتاً استعاری بوده و دانشمندان در همۀ زمان‌ها از استعاره بهره برده‌اند. در نوشتار حاضر تبیین‌هایی برای ضروری‌بودن استعاره در علم ارائه شده است؛ از جمله اینکه علم امری ایستا و متوقف نیست، بلکه امری زنده و پویاست و این زمانی محقق می‌شود که به وجود استعاره در علم باور داشته باشیم. همچنین با توجه به اینکه استعاره از خود زبان به طور مطلق حذف‌شدنی نیست و زبان آغشته به استعاره است، باید به ضروری‌بودن وجود استعاره در زبان علم به طور خاص باور داشته باشیم.

exploring the role of metaphor in the empirical sciences

one of the most significant contemporary insights in the philosophy of science is the central role of metaphor in scientific thinking. historically, metaphor was not considered fundamental in the empirical sciences and was even viewed by many scientists as potentially misleading. however, since the 1960s, this perspective has shifted: metaphor has evolved from a peripheral or ornamental device to a necessary epistemic tool. some philosophers of science now argue that science is inherently metaphorical and that scientists have always relied on metaphor in their reasoning. this paper presents several justifications for the indispensability of metaphor in science. science is not static or inert but dynamic and evolving, a reality that becomes intelligible when we acknowledge the role of metaphor. furthermore, since language cannot be completely disentangled from metaphor, the necessity of metaphor in the language of science must also be recognized.
