Abstract
identification and introduction of sustainable ecosystems not only contribute to long-term food security but also help protect natural resources and provide environmental services derived from these resources. in this study, input structure analysis and emergy-based indices were used to investigate and compare the environmental performance of two mechanized and traditional olive production ecosystems located in nehbandan county in 2022. for this purpose, all free environmental inputs and inputs extracted from the human economy, including renewable and non-renewable inputs, were measured and estimated for both traditional and mechanized olive systems. the total emergy input to the mechanized and traditional olive ecosystems was reported as 1.09 × 10¹⁸ and 2.00 × 10¹⁸ solar emjoules ha⁻¹ year⁻¹, respectively. among these inputs, the contribution of non-renewable inputs, particularly soil erosion, was greater than that of the other inputs. the amounts of purchased inputs in the mechanized and traditional olive systems were reported as 2.63 × 10¹⁶ and 1.61 × 10¹⁶ solar emjoules ha⁻¹ year⁻¹, respectively. emergy indices, including the percentage of renewable emergy (r), emergy yield ratio (eyr), standard investment ratio (eir) and modified investment ratio (eir*), and standard environmental loading ratio (elr) and modified environmental loading ratio (elr*), are used to identify the best management practices for olive production and facilitate the transition toward sustainable agriculture. the results showed that sustainable olive production requires a shift from systems based on fossil fuels, which are non-renewable and polluting resources, toward systems that use clean and renewable natural resources such as solar energy, wind, and water. to achieve more sustainable ecosystems, conservation tillage and replacement of chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizers are recommended for use in olive production ecosystems.
