Abstract
in this study, the effect of silicon in alleviating heavy metal cadmium stress in strawberry cv. parus was investigated. the experiment was conducted as a factorial experiment based on a completely randomized design with three replications in the greenhouse of the faculty of agriculture, ilam university. the treatments included cadmium supplied as cadmium nitrate at three levels (0, 100, and 200 μm) and silicon supplied as silicon oxide at two levels (0 and 20 mm). two months after the application of cadmium and silicon treatments, several physiological and morphological traits, including leaf number, runner number, plant height, leaf area, fresh and dry shoot weight, electrolyte leakage, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, carotenoids, and photosynthetic rate of strawberry plants were evaluated. the results showed that increasing cadmium concentration decreased leaf number, runner number, shoot length, leaf area, and fresh and dry plant weight in strawberry plants. cadmium also increased electrolyte leakage (68.61%) and decreased the contents of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll (6.88, 2.6, and 9.47 mg g⁻¹ fresh leaf weight, respectively), and carotenoids (1.75 mg g⁻¹ fresh leaf weight), consequently resulting in a reduction in photosynthetic rate in the plants. in contrast, silicon application improved the physiological and morphological traits of strawberry plants and reduced the adverse effects of cadmium on plant vegetative characteristics to an acceptable extent.
