معنای زندگی یکی از مهم ترین مسائلی است که در آثار نیچه به عنوان فیلسوف زندگی مطرح شده است. او با انکار جهان فرامحسوس، خدا و حقیقت و به طور کلی انکار ارزش‌های گذشته می گوید که زندگی یگانه ارزش و تنها منشاء ارزش‌هاست و بنابراین، همه ارزش‌ها باید از اصل حیات استخراج شوند و در جهانی که انسان معیار همه‌چیز است و همه چیز را منوط به خود می داند، پیامدش این است که، انسان و جهان او، بی ملاک، بدون محور و فاقد غایت و بی اعتبار می‌گردد. وقتی انسان خود را بنیاد همه هستی قرار داد، در این صورت خود بدون کانون، بی اساس و سرگردان می شود و به ورطه نیهیلیسم می‌افتد. با فرو ریختن بالاترین ارزش، یعنی با مرگ خدا و حقیقت، در یک چنین عالمی، حتی تکامل و ترقی، نیز اعتبار خود را از دست می‌دهد. زندگی در چنین جهانی نه امری مقدس و والا، بلکه امری پوچ و بی معناست که صرفاً باید به نحوی طنزآمیز با آن روبرو شد. اما از دیدگاه ادیان الهی زندگی پوج نیست بلکه هدفمند و معنادار است و خداوند یگانه حقیقت مقدسی است که انسان ها با سرسپردگی و ایمان به آن امر قدسی و پرستش او، می توانند به زندگی خویش معنا بخشند.
