Vocabulary and lexical knowledge are highly significant in the foreign language learning process. for teaching vocabulary and improving lexical knowledge, bilingual lists of words were used in grammar translation method. for the same aim, utilizing mother tongue of learners was forbidden in audio lingual method. appearance of communicative language teaching resulted in the use of new techniques and strategies of improving lexical knowledge such as pictures, posters, flashcards and ccqs. with the emergence of e-learning, there have been attempts to insert videos in the instructing process. animations, as videos, are used with different techniques such as “motion graphic” and “story educational 2d cartoons” in teaching and learning process. the present study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the animations in improving the colloquial expressions and lexical knowledge of iranian teenager efl learners. the participants of the study were 46 iranian teenager efl learners recruited based on convenience sampling. the quasi-experimental design of the study enjoyed pre-test, treatment, and post-test phases in control and experimental groups. the results of the ancova test revealed that animations have positive and large effect on both lexical knowledge and colloquial expressions of the learners. these findings provide helpful implications for foreign language teachers and learners.
