This paper reports on an experimental study investigating the effectiveness of using designed tasks on a virtual platform called second life (sl) on iranian advanced efl learners listening comprehension and also its effect on their affective factors, such as attitude and anxiety. to this end, a mixed method design was conducted, and two groups (control group and experimental group) each consisting of 30 advanced iranian english language learners, ranging from 18 to 25 were examined. however, only learners in the experimental group underwent a seven-session-task-training program while no such training was given to the participants of the control group. this study has three instruments: i) ielts listening tests as pre-test and post-test to determine participants’ proficiency level before and after task training sessions, ii) a questionnaire to understand how the participants of the experimental group feel toward learning on sl, and iii) semi-structured interviews to further solidify the findings. the findings showed that task-training sessions on sl were effective in a way that not only improved participants’ listening comprehension but also helped them to manage their stress and lessen their anxiety, hence, creating a positive attitude toward the new learning context none of which was observed with the control group.
