an investigation of problem in speaking english at ssc level in non-elite private schools in pakistan: reasons and solutions

The study investigates the problems faced by the students or learners in speaking english at the s.sc level in non-elite private schools in pakistan. the main problems are the lack of opportunity and less exposure to the use of a second language in their real lives. however, the lack of appropriate and helpful vocabulary and basic grammatical structures are also found to be the hindering factors, specifically, for the same reason: lack of practice and opportunity, and little exposure. fear of mistakes and lack of confidence is also found among learners due to the stereotypical mindset of society towards the english language, which hindered them from speaking. moreover, with the linguistic problems too, containing vocabulary and grammatical structure, side by side: it has also been observed that institutes’ and teachers’ roles and strategies are not met the required level. the findings indicated that early age greatly impacted the participants’ speaking fluency. it is time to change the traditional curriculum. some fruitful suggestions or solutions, however, are given on both teaching and learning english as a second language. the study aims to find out the causes that hinder esl learners to speak english or have a low proficiency level in speaking skills.
