the effect of persian movie subtitles on iranian efl learners’ vocabulary translation based on newmark’s model

Research shows that movies can be as effective materials in understanding and translating foreign language vocabulary and sentences since they provide valuable input for english language learners to be exposed to the target language produced in an authentic cultural environment and context. in addition, movie subtitles, like other types of audio-visual translation, have always influenced the translation of vocabulary and sentences of efl learners. according to reports, movies with subtitles are a means of correct translation of vocabulary, phrases, terms and increase cultural awareness and practice pronunciation in the target language. many researches have investigated the effect of subtitled movies on different skills and components of the second language. the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of persian movie subtitles on efl learners’ vocabulary translation based on the newmark model. to do this, the movie frozen 2 was chosen from walt disney pictures and channel films, and its persian translation was compared with the relevant parts above. the findings showed that the translation of most of the vocabulary and sentences in the selected movie frozen 2 from the two companies mentioned were based on the newmark model. in addition, the results showed that the transfer, descriptive equivalent, and cultural equivalent, change or displacement have mostly used in the subtitles of the persian movies based on the newmark model. the findings of the current study can be useful for english translation students, subtitle makers, and fans, who follow english movies in persian context.
