The marks or scores obtained by a student in an examination are raw scores. according to the authors, proper decision and conclusion cannot be drawn on the basis of these raw scores because the present scale of examination is full of deficiencies and errors. this scale is too approximate and we cannot measure the progress of students in the true sense of the word. therefore, it is suggested that an alternate and effective way to evaluate the progress of students that is known as the standard score method. a case study was conducted to evaluate the progress of two different groups of students in the mathematics unit by using the standard score method. the results show that the standard scores method is a better and more accurate method to measure the progress of students compared to the traditional method of giving marks in percentage. finally, the author concluded that the students who scored more than 58% in the first semester, 2021 had better progress than in the first semester, 2022 students who scored the same marks in the mathematics unit. however, the students who scored 58% or less marks in the first semester, 2021 had poorer progress than in the first semester, 2022 students who scored the same marks in the mathematics unit.
