An experiment was conducted where students learned english in a classroom and then applied it to unfamiliar situations. participants were taught familiarization strategies to gain a deeper understanding of unfamiliar environments through the use of a mobile learning system. participants were able to take photos of people, objects, situations, or scenarios and describe them in detail via a mobile learning system. using mobile-mediated language learning as a context, we examined how familiarization strategies affected learning outcomes. the experiment involved 26 participants who were randomly assigned to experimental or control groups. the former group used familiarization strategies in contrast to the latter. we compared the learning performance of the two groups by comparing pre- and post-test results for phrase translation, sentence translation, and writing items. similarly, a similar analysis was conducted on the quality of efl writing across five tasks, including amount, vocabulary, grammar, content, origination, and creativity, in both groups. only the writing item showed a significant improvement in the experimental group compared to the control group. results showed that the experimental group significantly improved on all six dimensions of writing quality. participants also viewed our learning system as helpful for their efl learning in unfamiliar settings. the results indicate familiarization strategies can greatly improve efl learning performance in unfamiliar settings.
