a cross-disciplinary study of stance and engagement markers in research articles’ result and discussion sections

The corpus used in this study included twenty academic research articles result and discussion sections. ten of them were devoted to chemistry and the other ten articles were devoted to elt. they were all taken from reliable and trusty journals and conform to isi index in each field. the selected articles in each field were taken from different journals for the purpose of conducting a comparative study. the total number of the words in the aforementioned section in each of the fields was nearly the same. this study was based on a mixed-method design. after confirmation of all the articles, the result and discussion sections of the articles were extracted. after selecting the articles, all the stances and engagements in result and discussion sections of the two disciplines were identified and highlighted. then, the frequency of occurrence in each discipline was counted. the framework of this study was based on hyland’s (2005) model. analysis of the data revealed that stance markers were used more frequently than the engagement markers. boosters had the highest frequency and attitude markers had the lowest frequency in both articles. concerning engagement markers, directives had the highest frequency and shared knowledge and personal aside were among the lowest frequency across the two disciplines.
