the effect of instagram vlogs on efl learners’ vocabulary learning and speaking skill

In most efl contexts, learners have limited access to conventional teaching and learning materials (such as printed books, journals, and computers), and they do not get enough opportunities to practice english outside the classroom setting. in order to address this problem, and in conformity with the constructivist approach to language teaching and learning, this research investigated whether the use of instagram vlogs affects english language learners vocabulary and speaking skill. sixty pre-intermediate efl learners were selected based on the results of the oxford quick placement test (oqpt) from two private language institutes. in order to collect the required data pre-tests and post-tests were administered before and after the treatment i.e. instagram vlogs. the experimental group was trained for ten sessions with the speak out book along with instagram vlogs related to their course through the big blue button platform and after every three sessions, learners made a vlog two by two via video calling on skype and recorded their videos which were sent to the researcher. their new vlogs were posted on the private instagram account and the rest of the learners watched. while the control group received traditional training with only the speak out textbook. the results of the independent sample t-test demonstrated that using instagram vlogs has significant effect on the efl learners’ vocabulary knowledge. it was also found that the integration of instagram vlogs in the process of language learning has significant effect on the efl learners’ speaking skill. in other words, the group of efl learners who were taught speaking skill using instagram vlogs outperformed the control group. the findings of this study point to possible effective ways of teaching english to language learners.
