investigating the influence of ideology on translation: a critical discourse analysis of “a portrait of the artist as a young man” and its persian translations

Translation has an important role in human life. different novels are the result of different ideas and viewpoints of their writers and therefore their translators. different translations of a specific novel elucidate the ideologies of their translators. despite the importance of the influence of ideology on translation, there isn’t enough research in this area. in this regard, this study applied critical discourse analysis (cda) to analyze the effect of ideology on translations from english to persian. the corpus consisted of the book “a portrait of the artist as a young man” written by james joyce (1916) along with its three persian translations:” written by darioosh(1991), n poor (2015). this research was conducted based on farahzad’s (2011) three-dimensional cda model: textual, para-textual, and semiotic. at textual level, the researcher worked on lexical items, positive/negative, tense and etc. at para-textual level, footnotes and prefaces were analyzed; and at semiotic level, color and design of the cover of translated books were examined. the findings showed that all three translators have made some changes which affected ideological load of the texts. these changes were rooted in political, social, cultural and religious conditions of the country after the islamic revolution of iran. additionally, findings showed that parviz darioosh applied the least amount of manipulation in his translation and his translation was the most similar translation to the source book. on the other hand, manoochehr badiyi applied the highest amount of manipulation in his translation. the findings of this study can be useful for students, teachers, researchers and practitioners in translation studies.
