mtpe: a proposal for ‘translation and technology’ course educators

Technology has drawn significant attention in translation and interpreting studies worldwide by providing ample opportunities for translation services. as technology advances, machine translations are getting more dependable. they are cost-efficient, and they significantly speed up the translation processes in a variety of services. although, the raw, unedited output of machine translation could rarely be technically accurate and ready to use due to blunders in various aspects. if applied accurately, mtpe- machine translation post-editing- can assist the translator with high-quality renderings and amending mistranslations. in recent years, machine translation has altered translation practices. hence, translation academic programs must embrace and leverage relevant technologies to enhance instrumental competence on behalf of learners. in the recently-revised ba in english translation program curriculum, one two-credit course has been devoted to ‘translation and technology’ that seems to leave some space for training students on mtpe. therefore, the present study highlights some mtpe practices that can be utilized in the course mentioned above by introducing machine translation, definitions, functions, purposes and benefits, types of post-editing, and comparing the machine-translated excerpts and their post-edited versions. to the bargain, the present paper makes students aware of the potentiality of the mtpe and its significant role in the technology-driven translation industry regarding common errors in machine translation, dealing with them and reducing such errors in their upcoming translation projects. thanks to the nature of the target course, the broad implication of the study is that course educators can benefit from this proposal by implementing it in both their face-to-face as well as their online classes.
