چکیده

Animated adaptations of literary works have had a huge influence on the development of people's understanding of literature. oliver twist (charles dickens) is one of the works that has been adapted into film and animation. this research is based on an analysis of oliver twist animation, which was directed by richard slapczynski in 1982. in this animated film, several literary elements such as plot structure, characterization, setting, and narrative technique are discussed. katrina perdikaki (2017) developed an adaptation model for the analysis and interpretation of adaptation shifts in her ph.d. thesis. this study will build on katrina's work. there is a descriptive/ comparative component and and an interpretive component to the model.the descriptive/comparative component consists of four categories (plot structure, narrative technique, characterization, and setting), which contain three types of adaptation shifts (modulation, modification and mutation) based on the van leuven-zwart (1980) taxonomy. finally, it is concluded that whereas the animation adaptation is faithful to the source text but the story in the animation was simplified. moreover, by considering the time limit in making the animation, excision and alteration are the most used categories in animation adaptation.
