applications of standard query language (sql) for analyzing translated archetypes

This article offers a comprehensive view of current research directions in using standard query language in translation and interpreting studies. standard query language has wide applications in programming, managing, and analyzing data gathered from translated corpora. using sql server management studio, the researchers conducted this study through the following steps: a. designing the data model for creating and labeling the database, b. creating tables and fields with relevant datatypes required for incorporating the data into different schemas, c. depending on the data formats (.text, xlsx, pdf, .doc), working out the raw data needed in proportion to text type, and d. incorporating the tables with primary and foreign keys to have a relational database. the researchers modeled the jungian archetypes into three relational tables at three general info., detail info., and sub-detail info. data levels. the main corpus was kept in a separate table for the purpose of the study. since the study focused on jungian archetypes in the translated corpus of the kalevala (finnish epic poem), three aspects were analyzed. the sql queries written by the researcher determined the assumed scenarios in a quantitative format. the results show that among the three jungian archetypes, the degree of convergence of the original text and the translated corpora is highest in the “appearances” archetype as compared to “symbols” and “situations.” in conclusion, sql-based analysis proved to be very helpful in organizing translation and interpreting research and exploring the key methodological approaches to research in translation and interpreting studies, including corpus-based, longitudinal, observational, and ethnographic studies, and focus group-based studies.
