چکیده
|
The ongoing paper delves into the realization of the relationship between l2 proficiency and (a) appropriateness of refusals, and (b) employing refusal strategies in implementing refusals in persian. conducting a spoken discourse completion task (dct), data were obtained from 30 learners of persian at three various proficiency levels and from 10 persian native speakers. the situations focused in the dct differed in power and social interval such as refusing a friend’s request to lend coat or money, refusing a neighbor’s request to lend a tool, and refusing a boss’s request to leave earlier). outcomes basically indicated a positive relationship between proficiency and l2 persian learners’ appropriateness and using refusal strategies in their refusals. after all, findings indicated that native speakers merely used spoken persian, that is, the dialect, whereas learners relied heavily on modern standard persian. analysis of refusal strategies showed that native speakers were inclined to provide implicit and equivocal explanations in their refusals except when refusing the neighbor’s request, while learners tended to provide definitive and explicit reasons for their refusals. furthermore, advanced learners were considerably verbose; subsequently, their refusals could be recognized as criticizing their interlocutor. this report gives implications for investigating and teaching l2 persian refusals with particular attention to multidialectal practices.
