چکیده    Due to the fact that there are a few distinctions between modern and postmodern dramas, the aim of this paper is to evaluate the differences between modern and postmodern drama focusing on tennessee william's a streetcar named desire and tom stoppard's travesties. to determine why these two plays are different, the researchers have gathered detailed information concerning salient features of modern and postmodern dramas. within the framework of this criteria, each feature can be found in the mentioned plays to achieve the objectives of this paper. the characters of a streetcar named desire are analyzed by the researchers as ordinary people without heroic habits in comparison with travesties' characters who are historical personalities that are gathered in an imaginary situation. modern drama which is considered to be readerly, addresses different elements that emerged based on the 19th and 20th centuries in the situation of post-world war. some themes of modern drama are like order, purposefulness, time laps and flashbacks, feelings of alienation and loneliness which can be realized in modern plays. as a reaction to modern drama, postmodern one will be compared to it based on its characteristics in this research. postmodern dramas as writerly texts cover pluralism of meaning, ambiguity, uncertainty, disorder, chance and concept of grand narrative as their themes. comparing these two types of drama completely, the other elements like binary opposition, fragmentation, pastiche and open-ending will also be scrutinized by the researchers. our findings indicate how different literary works follow different elements of various periods. furthermore, providers and analysts can be informed through the study about two different models of drama and can use the findings of our study to interpret different playwrights' works.
