   pathology of english language teaching and learning: a case study of a military university

چکیده    This study examines the challenges in teaching and learning english as a foreign language at an iranian military university in tehran. for this purpose, the researchers conducted quantitative and qualitative study. based on random sampling method, 181 third year students were selected as a sample for the quantitative section and in the qualitative section, purposeful and theoretical sampling was used. a researcher-made questionnaire, a standard language proficiency test, and a semi-structured interview with a number of participants were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data set. in the quantitative study, descriptive analysis of data (measures of central tendency and measures of dispersions) was used and in the qualitative study, the coding method of grounded theory (open coding, axial coding and selective coding) was used. the results of this study showed that there are challenges in the areas of educational context, language learners, teachers, educational approaches, educational materials and resources and officials.
