با توجه به افزایش میزان انتشار گاز دی‌اکسید کربن و تاثیرات مخرب آن بر محیط‌زیست، پیدا کردن راه‌حلی برای کاهش انتشار و جمع‌آوری این گاز ضروری به نظر می رسد؛ از طرفی، با توجه به منبع تولید گازهای گلخانه‌ای (به‌خصوص دی‌اکسیدکربن)، در حال حاضر کاهش تولید این گاز چندان موثر و امکان‌پذیر نمی باشد؛ لذا یکی از راه های کاهش تاثیرات مخرب دی‌اکسید کربن، کاهش انتشار این گاز به جو با استفاده از ذخیره‌سازی (دفع، نگهداری، ترسیب) زیرزمینی دی‌اکسید کربن تولید شده از منابع انتشار می‌باشد. ساختارهای زمین‌شناسی می توانند، گزینه مناسبی برای ذخیره این گاز باشند. از سوی دیگر، یکی از شیوه های مهم ازدیاد برداشت نفت، تزریق گاز دی اکسید کربن است که می تواند باهدف ترسیب این گاز نیز (چنانچه اشاره شد)، باشد. لذا ترکیب و اتصال این دو رویکرد، نتایج مضاعف و بهینه ای را به همراه خواهد داشت که البته همراه با ملاحظات و جنبه های فنی خاص خود خواهد بود که موضوع این مقاله تحلیلی است.
