in 2012, unesco organized the 3rd international conference on vocational education and training. now, more than a decade later, we propose a quadruple model that seeks to explore the relationship between professional education and development. first, we note that the vast majority of published research on vocational education and training (vet) in developing countries focuses on practice and is concerned with improving classrooms, curricula, mainly in the public sector. will be while considering vet in development contexts, it usually does not address questions about the relationship between vet and development. second, it provides an economic analysis of skills development in the global south. as we explained in the article, it has two main strands: one from the supply side and the other from the demand side. the former focuses on the efficiency of the vet system, while the latter addresses labor market demands for skills and training. third, there is a constructivist tradition in which researchers emphasize the empirical observation of the ways in which skills are needed and used in the lives of the people who embody them, rather than prioritizing the models and logics of the general structure of vet and training programmes. . fourth, the political economy of the skills tradition deals with the rules of how skills development operates, with a strong historical and comparative sensitivity.
