Abstract    reducing income inequality is a fundamental issue in achieving the sustainable development goals. in recent years, inequality between the rich and the poor in iran has increased. this trend has been exacerbated by a combination of domestic economic policies, international sanctions, and various socio-political factors. while multiple elements contribute to this issue, foreign direct investment (fdi) is considered a crucial factor that can affect income inequality in iran. some economic theories, such as modernization theory, emphasize the positive role of foreign direct investment in reducing income inequality, but others, such as dependency theory and north-south theory, argue that foreign direct investment increases income inequality. this study applies the autoregressive distributed lag (ardl) approach to analyze the relationship between income inequality and foreign direct investment in iran over the period 13767 to 1401. it focuses on how various factors impact foreign direct investment and, consequently, income distribution. in addition to assessing the direct impact of fdi on income distribution, the study evaluates the interactive effects of key influencing factors on foreign investment and their role in shaping in income inequality. the findings indicate that, in the short run, foreign direct investment and trade openness have a and significant positive effect on the gini coefficient in the direct model. in both direct and interactive models, a significant inverse relationship is observed between an efficient government and income inequality. the lagged effect of political stability variable is also positive and significant in both models. financial development and the unemployment rate increase income inequality in the interactive effects model. additionally, the financial kuznets hypothesis was tested and confirmed. in the long run, an efficient government has a negative effect on the gini coefficient. however, increasing political stability, unemployment rate, and promoting financial development lead to increasing income inequality. the effect of oil revenues and the degree of trade openness is not significant in the short and long run.
