چکیده
|
The transmission of greek logic and philosophy to the arab and persian cultures created various reactions among medieval muslim scholars, among them the reaction of the polymath ibn taymīyah (1263-1328) is paradigmatic, for he presented a critical reaction to aristotelian logic and, by extension, to avicenna in its concepts and arguments from which a critical history of logic in the islamic world can be drawn.to this end, a critical analysis of excerpts from three works in arabic by ibn taymīyah, only one of which has been translated into western languages, is presented:1.the refutation of the contradiction between reason and revelation (dar' ta'arud al-'aql wa al-naql).2.the refutation of the logicians (kitāb al-raḍ-ḍ 'alá al-manṭiqīyn).3.the methodology of the prophetic tradition (minhāj al-sunnah).thus, the paper seeks to present the similarities and differences between the logic and philosophy of aristotle and ibn sīnā at three key points:1.the biographies of aristotle (arisṭū) and ibn sīnā.2.the relation of logic (manṭiq) and philosophy (falsafah).3.the central logical concepts.on the biographies, descriptions about both thinkers who shape ibn taymīyah's critique of greek and muslim logic and philosophy in the notions of first cause (al-'illah al-ūlá) and necessary being (ūājib al-ūjūd) are briefly presented, and the concepts of definitions (ḥudūd), substance (jaūhar), accident ('arḍ), necessary (ūājib), possible (mumkin) are analyzed to show the relationship between logic and philosophy.among the results, it is shown how, from ibn taymīyah's critical texts, ibn sīnā's logical advances are recognized against his predecessors such as abū bakr al-rāzī and al-fārābī.ibn taymīyah's critique of logic and philosophy includes an implicit use of both and, at the same time, an explicit use of logical arguments and philosophical concepts, along with theological explanation from qur'anic texts and the prophetic tradition.
