Aim and background: in the present study, a double-layered structure was obtained by electrospinning of pure type i collagen and collagen/plla/zataria multiflora essential oil nanofibers.methods: the extracted essential oil was analyzed by gc–mass spectrometry and bi-layers were characterized by sem, water contact angle measurements, xrd and atr-ftir. results and discussion: water contact angle and swelling studies showed hydrophilic nature and a high water absorption capacity of the nanofibers. also, the essential oil illustrated a strong antioxidant activity with ic50: 7.4 ppm. investigation of cumulative release of the essential oil from structures displayed a burst release in 120 minutes and then, a sustained release up to 72 h. micro-dilution, disk diffusion and aatcc 100 assays were performed that exhibited strong antibacterial and antifungal activities. alamar blue and live/dead assays illustrated the viability of the fibroblast cells on the obtained structures. conclusion: double-layered nanofiber structures with strong antimicrobial, antioxidant and water absorption capabilities would be promising as potential wound dressings.
