Aim and background: hydrogels reinforced with titanium dioxide nanoparticles (tio2-nps) are bioactive dressings for biomedical applications including wound healing. in addition, it is a low-cost and biodegradable alternative for faster wound healing and skin cell migration. methods: literature was reviewed and their findings were recapitulated.results and discussion: super-absorbent polyvinyl alcohol (pva)/starch/tio2-nps hydrogel membranes demonstrated faster wound healing than traditional cotton gauze dressing because they could absorb large amounts of wound exudates and allow air to circulate. tio2-nps are performed as mechanical reinforcement in addition to using as an antibacterial agent. in a novel study, gellan gum biopolymer hydrogel film with tio2 nanorods showed high cell viability and good proliferation. also, this augmented scaffold resulted in a thicker epidermis and transparent dermis, indicating a positive correlation between wound healing and skin tissue regeneration. the chitosan-tio2 hybrid composite showed inhibitory growth against staphylococcus aureus, and escherichia coli, which also promoted faster wound healing with cell growth and higher re-epithelization processes. tio2 can produce reactive oxygen species (ros) which can oxidize lipids, lipopolysaccharides, and bacterial cell membranes. it should be mentioned that the addition of tio2 will decrease the transparency and absorbance, on the other hand, it will improve the thermal properties, which is attributed to the formation of intermolecular and intramolecular interactions between biopolymers and tio2 nanoparticles. conclusion: the review of the studies conducted on hydrogels containing titanium dioxide nanoparticles showed that the use of tio2 as a reinforcing agent in hydrogels is a new strategy that significantly improves the mechanical properties, antibacterial properties, and wound healing process
