degenerative left shift associated with lipoma in a budgerigar (melopsittacus undulatus): a case report

Infection can impress immune system. acute and chronic septicemia which did not cured well can predispose other abnormalities due to impact on immune function. in the other hand, the incidence of neoplasia in budgerigars is comparatively higher than other avian species. different types of tumors are detected in budgerigars composing of liposarcoma, lymphomas and etc. in this article, simultaneous occurrence of sever septicemia and lipoma is evaluated. a 1-year old budgerigar (melopsittacus undulatus) was presented with a history of lethargy, anorexia and a mass in which has appeared and grew since 3 weeks ago. clinical examination revealed a large pale yellow soft and freely movable subcutaneous that was occur multiple masses in the left cervical region which extended to midline abdomen. after supportive treatment and stabilizing the patient, blood samples for hematology and biochemistry panel were taken and fna biopsy of the mass was obtained in order to evaluate the preliminary diagnosis. survey radiographs and ultrasonography were performed to distinguish the origin. hematology analysis showed wbc= 9000 cell/ml, hct=50%, plt=240000 cell/ml, heterophil= 21%, monocyte= 1%, eosinophil= 1%, lymphocyte= 16%, bond cell= 61% which is remarkable for degenerative left shift. only significant finding in biochemical profile was hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia. fna of specimen illustrated cluster of well-differentiated adipocyte with eccentric nucleus and abundant clear cytoplasm which is indicative for lipoma. radiologic and ultrasonography respectively shown a soft tissue mass distinct from alimentary tract and multiple masses. concurrent occurance of immune supressive septicemia and neoplastic lesions can worsen the prognose of a benign neoplasia which could be cured well by a simple surgery in initial stages. therefore, presenting the birds with initial signs of abnormalities, can prevent lethal outcome.
