چکیده
|
The study of infectious diseases in hamsters is of significant importance to veterinary health and zoonotic disease research. hamsters are susceptible to a variety of bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections, some of which can be transmitted to humans through direct or indirect contact. as popular exotic pets, hamsters are particularly prone to several infectious diseases including candidiasis, chlamydiosis, streptobacillosis, salmonellosis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis (lcm), dermatophyte infections, and leishmaniasis. furthermore, hamsters can act as reservoirs for infectious diseases, potentially spreading to humans through direct and indirect means. while bites are the primary direct transmission mode, scratches and skin contact are also typical. the clinical manifestations of infectious diseases in hamsters can vary depending on the specific pathogen. symptoms may include weight loss, lethargy, unkempt fur, respiratory distress, and even severe complications involving multiple organs. diagnosing infectious diseases in hamsters can prove to be quite challenging. various treatment approaches are discussed in this study. recent research has highlighted the significant role of hamsters as animal models for studying infectious diseases. their biological characteristics and immune systems, which share similarities with humans, make them suitable hosts for viruses and bacteria. studies have shown that hamsters have been particularly valuable in the research of coronaviruses, hantaviruses, and leptospira. understanding and preventing infectious diseases in hamsters is crucial for promoting safe interactions between humans and pet hamsters.
