   application of antibacterial coating on veterinary orthopedic implants to reduce the rate of surgical failure

چکیده    One of the most important reasons for orthopedic surgery failures is biofilm implant-related infections and this reason costs the u.s. healthcare system over 3 billion dollars each year. thus, finding a way to prevent this problem is an important matter. due to the increasing number of veterinary orthopedic surgeries, preventing veterinary surgery’s ssi is necessary. plates made of titanium alloy and covered with composite hybrid layers have been studied in vivo and in vitro. the hybrid coatings were obtained via electrochemical oxidation and sol-gel. hybrid coatings modified with ag nanoparticles (agnps) applied on tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (tplo) medical implants by the sol-gel process were also tested. in a newer study, a novel silver plasma coating was tested on methicillin-resistant staphylococcus pseudintermedius (mrsp). an anodized titanium dental implant surface covered by a poly (sebacic anhydride) layer with amoxicillin was used and had a good result. on the other hand, an antimicrobial silver-based coated tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (tplo) plate (biomedtrix™) was tested to clarify the efficiency of antibacterial coating on veterinary orthopedic implants which was not efficient. all kinds of antibacterial coatings consisting of composite hybrid layers, agnps, a novel silver plasma coating, and poly(sebacic anhydride) layer with amoxicillin, were tested in different orthopedic procedures and, clarified that they are efficient and can reduce the rate of surgical failure except biomedtrix which has no significant difference with a normal implant. using a verified coated orthopedic implant not only helps to decrease ssi but also could speed up and facilitate the healing process.
