brucellosis: an overview

Brucellosis or malta fever remains a major zoonosis worldwide. although many countries have eradicated brucella abortus from cattle, in some areas brucella melitensis has emerged as a cause of infection in this species as well as in sheep and goats. despite vaccination campaigns with the rev 1 strain, b. melitensis remains the principal cause of human brucellosis. brucella suis is also emerging as an agent of infection in cattle. this review aims to synthesize current knowledge on the epidemiology, transmission, clinical manifestations, and control measures of brucellosis. there are many methods to diagnose brucellosis, but in recent years the use of molecular methods such as pcr and serological methods such as elisa has increased due to their high sensitivity and accuracy. prevention, control and eradication of brucellosis are different based on the economic situation in different countries, and in general, eradication and control of brucellosis are important from both economic and health aspects. therefore, increasing the awareness of livestock farmers and educating consumers through mass media and raising the level of awareness in the field of diseases that can be transmitted from milk and its products can be useful.
