Contagious ecthyma, along with other diseases like sheep pox and goat pox, poses a significant threat to sheep and goats in iran. the cross-reactivity of these viruses complicates diagnosis, leading to false positives. this study aims to explore the potential of using the goat pox vaccine to prevent contagious ecthyma outbreaks in sheep and goats. by reviewing articles and various guidelines, it was examined to see if the goat pox vaccine can be used for preventing contagious ecthyma or not. the effectiveness of the goatpox vaccine in preventing and treating contagious ecthyma in sheep and goats has been demonstrated in field trials. this vaccine, originating from a caprine strain of the virus, has been observed to stimulate the production of scabs effectively and safeguard goats from wild-type infections. additionally, an attenuated live vaccine targeting contagious ovine ecthyma has been developed and proven to be successful in preventing the disease in sheep. it is worth noting that vaccination with the goat-derived contagious ecthyma vaccine does not offer cross-protection against a more virulent field strain of orf virus, which could contribute to outbreaks of contagious ecthyma in vaccinated goats. the goatpox vaccine has shown promising results in preventing and managing contagious ecthyma outbreaks in sheep and goats. it effectively stimulates scab production, protects against wild-type infections, and has been successful in field trials. however, it is crucial to note that while an attenuated live vaccine for contagious ovine ecthyma has also been effective in sheep, the goat-derived vaccine may not offer cross-protection against more virulent strains of orf virus. further research and monitoring are necessary to evaluate the long-term effectiveness and potential limitations of using the goatpox vaccine for preventing contagious ecthyma in sheep and goats.
