چکیده    The central nervous system (cns) has a limited ability to self-repair and presents challenges in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and injuries. recent studies have suggested that herbal medicines can enhance the regenerative abilities of the cns. these plant-derived compounds, which have been used in traditional medicine for centuries, are increasingly recognized for their neuroprotective and neuroregenerative effects. this review aimed to explore the role of herbal medicines as potential therapeutic strategies for cns regeneration. chronic inflammation is a key feature of various cns disorders. herbal compounds like curcumin (from turmeric) and g. biloba exhibit anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce neuroinflammation, potentially improving outcomes in conditions like multiple sclerosis and alzheimer s disease. many herbal extracts, including those from green tea (epigallocatechin gallate) and rosemary (rosmarinic acid), possess antioxidant properties that neutralize free radicals, thereby protecting neurons from oxidative damage. certain herbs have been found to stimulate the production of neurotrophic factors such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (bdnf). for example, panax ginseng has been linked to increased levels of bdnf, which plays a critical role in neuronal survival, growth, and differentiation. some studies have suggested that specific herbal compounds can stimulate neurogenesis and the process of generating new neurons. for instance, extracts from bacopa monnieri have been shown to enhance neurogenesis in animal models, which could be beneficial for cognitive function recovery after injury. the exploration of herbal medicines as therapeutic strategies for cns regeneration is a burgeoning field that warrants further investigation. although traditional use offers a wealth of knowledge, rigorous scientific studies are needed to validate these approaches and integrate them into modern medical practices. future research should focus on understanding the dosage, mechanisms of action, and potential interactions with conventional therapies to maximize the therapeutic benefits of herbal medicines for promoting cns health and regeneration.
