evaluation of the antiviral activity of cinnamon extract on border disease virus in the cell culture system

The pestivirus genus of the flaviviridae family consists of four species of bovine viral diarrhea virus 1 (bvdv-1), bovine viral diarrhea virus 2 (bvdv-2), border disease virus (bdv) and classical swine fever virus (csfv). border disease (bd) is a viral disease of sheep and goats that has also been reported in cattle and wild animals. this virus primarily causes congenital disease, but can also cause acute and persistent infections. cinnamomum verum, an evergreen tree, is commonly used as a source of cinnamon spice. it is utilized for medicinal purposes in treating gastrointestinal issues and exhibits pharmacological activity with anti-inflammatory properties. the key components found in the cinnamomum verum plant are eugenol, cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, copane, and camphor. based on phytochemical analysis, the methanolic extract contains high levels of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenols and saponins. the antiviral properties of cinnamomum verum, also known as cinnamon, have not yet been reported against border disease virus. this study aims to evaluate the inhibitory effect of cinnamon extracts on bdv titer. in this study, cinnamomum verum was used to assess its antiviral effects against bdv. methanolic extracts of this plant were prepared at concentrations of 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg /ml, and were tested against bdv. the objective was to determine the viral titer using tcid50 in the mdbk cell line. the most significant effect of methanolic extracts of cinnamon on bdv was observed at concentrations of 200 mg /ml. there was a significant difference in reductions of viral titer using the tcid50 method. methanolic extracts of cinnamomum verum reduced the infectious titer of bdv.
