semiotic analysis of contemporary mosque architecture in tehran based on peirce's theory

Authors
Abstract    introduction: architecture, as a cultural product, expresses different ideas, beliefs, and philosophies found in various parts of the world, usually reflecting the connection between the place and its creation. since the physical space of any architectural structure can embody the history, culture, and values of a society, attention to mosques as a social and cultural product with a distinct architectural identity is more essential than ever. semiotics is a scientific discipline that can articulate an absent concept or phenomenon by examining the mechanisms of production, transmission, and reception of meaning within a structure, in order to establish a connection with the audience. therefore, due to the profound impact that symbols and signs have on the design and structure of mosque architecture, the current study aims to identify the symbols and signs present in contemporary mosques to preserve their religious and cultural identity, and compare them with the semiotic arrays used in traditional mosques.methodology: the present research is qualitative in nature and employs a descriptive–analytical-comparative method. four selected mosques in tehran are examined: tehran university mosque, al-ghadir mosque, and imam reza mosque as contemporary mosques, along with imam mosque as traditional mosque. in this study, qualitative data were extracted after gathering information from field visits, library research, and existing documents, and these data were categorized into five layers: environmental, structural, access, functional, and scenic. following coding and analysis of concepts at three levels (first, second, and third), the concepts were classified into explicit, implicit, and symbolic meanings. lastly, the findings were evaluated and analyzed using a descriptive-comparative approach.results: the research findings indicate that the positioning of mosques has changed from being at the main axis of the city in the past. additionally, in terms of accessibility and territory, introversion in contemporary mosques has diminished, leading to a manifestation of spatial hierarchy in form. this change has resulted in a transformation in structural geometry, particularly concerning the principles of symmetry and proportions in modern mosques. in al-ghadir mosque, the architect attempts to modernize the mosque while retaining certain symbolic features, such as brick materials and the presence of water in the mosque's space, evoking traditional mosques. however, this effort does not encompass all symbolic aspects of the mosque, as the abandonment of other significant elements, such as the iwan ( balcony, portico), courtyard, and minaret, has disrupted the continuum of mosque architecture evolution.conclusion: in a general summary, it can be stated that both traditional and contemporary mosque architecture encompasses elements of semiotics that convey various meanings and symbols. in traditional mosques, the main architectural elements often conveyed sacred and religious meanings and served as a bridge between the earthly and heavenly realms. in contrast, contemporary mosques, especially modern ones, focus on conveying secular meanings related to power through designed elements. this transformation reflects a shift in the symbolic concepts of mosque architecture, influenced by cultural, political, and social changes over time. therefore, the fundamental differences in the use of semiotics in traditional and contemporary mosque architecture demonstrate a transition from primarily sacred and religious meanings in traditional mosques to the incorporation of secular and power-related meanings in the design of contemporary and especially modern mosques.
