دسترسی اقتصادی به دارو و درمان از مهمترین ابعاد مهم حق سلامت به شمار می‌رودکه تحقق آن مستلزم این است که هر دولتی استراتژی های مشخص را بنا به شرایط، اولویت‌ها و نیازهای سلامت عمومی خود دنبال کند. با توجه به متغییر بودن نرخ ارز و تحریمها، اهمیت این موضوعات در ایران بیش از سایر کشورهاست. از آنجا که ایران به تازگی روش cost plus را کنار گذاشته است پس از تعیین قیمت قیمت لازم است همواره قیمت‌ها مطابق شرایط روز و نیازها و وجود داروهای مشابه اصلاح شود اما این اقدام در شرایطی قاعده‌مند نیست و در مورد داروها تک نسخه‌ای ملاحظات لازم و کافی در نظر گرفته نشده است. در حالی‌که کشورهای پیشرفته ای نظیر فرانسه و انگلیس بدون الزامات و پیش نیازها خاصی تمامی داروها را بر اساس ماهیت دارویی در فهرست تحت پوشش بیمه قرار می‌دهند، بودجه کشورهایی نظیر ایران چنین اجازه‌ای را نمی‌دهد لذا به‌ نظر می‌رسد موضوع کمبود بودجه بسیاری از سیاست‌ها از جمله اقتصاد دارو و رگولاسیون قیمت آن را تحت‌الشعاع قرار داده باشد. از طرفی، اگرچه اصلاح قیمت بطور سالانه با توجه به تغییرات قیمت در کشور مرجع و وارد کننده صورت می گیرد، در مورد تولیدات داخلی رویه مشخصی وجود ندارد
