islamic iranian identity in the state of transition from tradition to modernity; historical rethinking of the return to islamic self discourse

Authors mousavi siany saeid
Abstract    the development of communications، living in a multicultural world، and openness to diverse identity formation patterns have not only reduced the role of the discourse of returning to the self in constructing the iranian-islamic identity، but have also paved the way for the assimilation of the islamic self into the western other. overcoming this difficult situation requires a historical reconsideration of the factors that shaped the discourse of returning to the islamic self. it seems that the historical decline of iran and the defeat against colonial powers facilitated the formation of a discursive order in which three discourses—traditionalist، modernist، and returning to the islamic self—engaged in a struggle to define the relationship between the islamic self and the western other. among these، although the other-rejecting traditionalist discourse and the alliance of the pahlavi monarchy and nationalists provided the conditions for the penetration of modernist narratives into the iranian identity، the inconsistency of aspects of this narrative with the collective unconscious of iranians prevented the hegemony of the modernist discourse. the discourse of returning to the self exploited this vacuum to present an ideological narrative of the relationship between the islamic self and the western other، and with a creative inter-discursive action، gained hegemony over other identity formation patterns. ignoring the intellectual foundations of western civilization، denying the ancient identity of iran، and overlooking the sacred dimensions of the islamic self were the main flaws of this ideological narrative of the iranian-islamic identity
