   a comparative effect of self-esteem and self-regulation on iranian efl learners’ listening comprehension

چکیده    This study intended to find out the comparative effect of self-esteem and self-regulation on iranian efl learners’ listening comprehension. it also aimed at investigating the probable differences between the two genders’ listening comprehension in terms of their self-esteem and self-regulation. hence, it explored the listening performances of 84 available sophomore learners of english in two intact classrooms in shiraz applied science university in order to examine the issue under investigation. firstly, two paired samples t-tests were run based on listening comprehension tests administered at the beginning and at the end of the course to reveal the effect of self-esteem and self-regulation strategies on the learners’ listening comprehension improvement. two pearson product moment correlation tests were also performed to examine the relationship between the participants’ self-esteem and self-regulation scores, and their listening comprehension scores. furthermore, two independent sample t-tests were run in order to reveal the possible differences between males and females’ general self-esteem and self-regulation based on their answers to the questionnaires. after that two two-way anova tests were performed, at the beginning and at the end of the treatment, in order to understand the possible differences between the two genders’ listening performances across the two groups. the findings of the study revealed that employing self-esteem and self-regulation strategies improved the listening comprehension of the participants significantly with similar effects on males and females. however, those focusing on the employment of self-regulation strategies outperformed the other group in their listening performances.
