   metadiscourse and its function in academic writing

چکیده    Metadiscourse with its two subcategories (interactive and interactional) is used in text by its producer to interact with his or her own text and also negotiate with imagined audience. it helps author to guide reader’s perception through the text and to comment on some parts of the text that need extra note for better comprehension. in this paper we intended to explain the role of metadiscourse markers in producing text and in our academic writing and explore factors that affect their application. to this end tefl textbooks written by english writers versus persian writers were analyzed. this is done through content analysis and all gathered data are presented in a qualitative form. the result indicated that appropriate use of metadiscourse markers let authors’ voice to accommodate and oblige students with limited knowledge to better comprehension of a text and some factors impact the application of metadiscourse by writers, such as genre and culture.
