   A Deeper Look Into the Catcher in the Rye and Its Persian Translation From A Sociolinguistic Perspective

چکیده    The field of translation studies (ts) has mainly to do with a socio-communicatively motivated and situated enterprise. viewed thus, it seems that no branch of knowledge tends to provide the possibility of examining the interrelations between interlocutors to communicate meaning within the interactive social context as strictly as sociolinguistics (federici, 2018). a sociolinguistic approach to translation is progressively gaining ground, at the crossroads of translation and interpreting studies (tis) and sociology within the sociological turn (wolf, 2010). in this way, the present study took a sociolinguistic approach to shed some light on the catcher in the rye (1958) and its persian translation by barseqhian (2014). accordingly, an extended version of hatim and mason’s (1997) sociolinguistic model was provided and in turn, employed to investigate the texts in question. the source text (st) and its target text (tt) version were examined at both textual and extra-textual levels in light of the model’s respective sub-components. the findings of this comparative study, analyzed individually for each register variable, suggested that the translator dealt rather superficially with both use-related categories of register variation like tenor and user-related aspects like idiolect. in addition, the results revealed that the predominant features of literary expression, including the descriptive statements, hyperbole and metaphorical expressions were by and large, overlooked in the tt. hence, this study might possibly contribute to our current understanding of why in a specific discourse, speakers make particular selections among available linguistic variants, providing some insights to the dynamicity of the process of sociolinguistic examination.
