assessiment of academic and specialized vocabulary knowledge of engineering scholars based on written corpus for needs-based approach to eap course

This study aims at assessing the academic and specialized vocabulary knowledge of non-native (iranian) engineering scholars based on availability in isi articles corpus (academic writing) to analysis the needs in order to re-evaluate the available syllabuses in the two fields of general english (ge) and technical language (eap) in universities. the current article has accomplished based on mixed methods, which was considered the amount of native (n) scholars' academic and specialized vocabulary knowledge ratio to the non-natives (nns) (as a quantitative part), and was investigated the notions if nns respect to learning and teaching of ge and eap (as qualitative part). to accomplish quantitative part, the samples included random isi articles, 40 of ns engineering scholars and 40 articles in islamic azad university, south tehran branch (iau, stb) (chemical and mechanical engineerings, each field 20 ns, 20 nns). additionally, in qualitative part, 30 nns from iau,stb (each field 15)were randomly selected to be interviewed. the results of quantitative and qualitative parts were related to each other, and they concluded that nns' vocabulary knowledge were much lesser than ns. additionally, interviews showed that nns essentially needed to change their views on learning and teaching ge and eap at university (learning and teaching vocabulary knowledge) . at the final stage, after investigating the changes in existed needs in order to learn and teach theacademic and specialized vocabulary knowledge, the research was developed a short pamphlet of material as suggestion for further study.
