چکیده
|
London, capital city of the great britain referred bywilliam wordsworth as “the mighty heart” in one of hisworks, has been throughout ages scenes writers, critics,bards, sonneteers, playwrights and novelist have oftenchosen for their setting depending on the developmentof the time.from shakespeare in his doomed “king lear” to hisambitious “macbeth”, from the earliest poems andnarratives composed in middle english by geofferychaucer to the prominent poet and critic of the 18 thcentury to dr. samuel johnson, to the highly talentedalexander pope and distinguished critic poet t.s.eliot andgeorge bernard shaw -both winners of the noble prize inliterature- have all tried their pens for london.this paper shall deal with major political financial, socialand ideological and romantic trends of the ages bringinginto limelight the critical conflicts and immense rolelondon has played in english literature.
