Assessing Degrees of Domestication/Foreignization in English- Persian Translations of News Phrasal Verbs

This paper aims at investigating degrees of domestication and foreignization applied by 20 english translation students, in translating english phrasal verbs into persian. the research tries to serve its purpose by making use of several underlying strategies proposed by pederson (2005), namely retention, specification, direct translation, generalization, substitution and omission. pederson identifies retention, specification, direct translation as sl-oriented strategies and generalization, substitution and omission as tl-oriented strategies. the researchers will try to find out whether english translation students tend to domesticate the news headlines or foreignize them. for the purpose of this study the students will be asked to translate news from english articles containing covid19 news. news containing phrasal verbs will be analyzed, then the persian translations will be compared and contrasted. the translation strategies applied by the students will be analyzed, and the frequency of each strategy will be calculated.keywords: domestication, foreignization, translation strategies, phrasal verbs.
