   Iranian Efl Learners’ Realization of Congratulation Speech Act: An Interlanguage Pragmatics Study

چکیده    , this study was an attempt to examine iranian efl learners’ interlanguage pragmatics behavior, focusing on their realization of congratulation speech act in english. the study was further interested in investigating whether iranian efl learners’ realization of congratulation speech act was associated with their level of l2 proficiency. to this end, this study adopted a quantitative research design and utilized two data elicitation instruments including the oxford quick placement test (2004), a written discourse completion test (wdct) in both english and persian. following the traditional interlanguage design, three groups of participants partook in this study including iranian undergraduate efl learners responding in both english and persian, and american english native speakers (nss) responding in english. for the first part of the study, the undergraduate participants were divided into three language proficiency levels (elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels) based on their scores on the oxford quick placement test. the wdct was administered to iranian efl learners in both english and persian, and the american nss received and responded the questionnaire via email. the elicited congratulation responses were analyzed based on elwood’s (2004b) coding scheme. results from this study, revealed that iranian efl learners had access to the same congratulation strategies as english nss, yet they, at times, had different strategy preferences. in addition, level of l2 proficiency was found to be associated with iranian efl learners’ realization of congratulation speech act.
