Investigating the Effects of System Architecture Modularity on Acquisition of Design Knowledge by Latecomer System Integrator Firms

Authors
Abstract    Acquiring basic design knowledge is very difficult for latecomer system integrator firms. The existing literature considers breadth and depth of the required technical knowledge as their main obstacles in this regard. Some researchers believe that the knowledge of the system integrator should cover the full architecture and component knowledge of the system and provide sufficient depth to perform the various stages of system design from conceptual design to detailed design. In contrast, another group of researchers believes that the modularity of system architecture allows system integrators to focus their knowledge on system architecture or on a smaller number of components, and it is not necessary to cover all design steps. In this paper, to provide a better understanding of how the integrity of system architecture affects the acquisition of the required technical knowledge, we have examined the basic design knowledge of three latecomer system integrator firms who have designed systems with different degrees of architectural modularity throgh a triple case study. The results of this study explain the various dimensions of the relationship between system architectur’s modularity degree and the degree of acquisibility of the required technical knowledge. In addition, this study develops previous criteria in the research background for measuring the acquisibility of technical knowledge (breadth and depth) by introducing a third measure which is the acquisibility degree of each part of technical knowledge. We propose a new conceptual framework in this regard.
