the impact of justice and development party’s governance method on turkey’s democratization process

Over the past century, turkey has experienced various anddissimilar governance methods, such as constitutional, singleparty,multi-party, fiduciary, participatory liberalism,conservative liberalism, delegative and quasi-authoritarian,each of which has influenced democratization process in eitherpositive or negative way. this issue raises numerous doubtsabout the why and how of the impact of governance method ondemocratization process, a subject that has not receivedadequate attention by researchers (background) so far. themain question in this study involves the explanation andelaboration of such positive or negative effects. this is fulfilledvia process tracing method, expression of the causalmechanism (mechanism finding), and the use of library anddigital resources. justice and development party, as the leadingsovereignty of turkey for the last two decades, has employedthree governance methods of “conservative liberalism”,“delegative” and “quasi-authoritarian” with positive, positivenegativeand negative impacts, respectively on democratizationprocess. the main finding of this study, therefore, is that thetype of governance method can act as either a barrier or afacilitator on the path to democratization process.
