the most important medicinal plants in the treatment of hypothyroidism in iranian traditional medicine: a review

Objective: hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland fails to produce sufficient hormones, resulting in a decrease in metabolism and the slowing down of bodily functions. this disorder is generally manageable with medication and is typically not a cause for major concern. the aim of this review is to identify and report on the most important medicinal plants that are used in the treatment of hypothyroidism within the context of iranian traditional medicine.methods: in this review study, keywords such as medicinal plants, hypothyroidism, iranian traditional medicine, and herbal treatments were employed to search for relevant articles. databases including google scholar, sid, megairan, pubmed, and scopus were utilized for gathering credible scientific articles. articles and sources related to ethnobotany were reviewed and analyzed for further insight into this subject.results: the medicinal plants ginger, apple, coconut, lentil, turmeric, thyme, pumpkin, sunflower, almond, walnut, cinnamon, garlic, burdock, nettle, chamomile, cranberry, raspberry, white mulberry, black mulberry, sage, and lemon balm are among the most important used for the treatment of hypothyroidism.conclusion: the use of medicinal plants in iranian traditional medicine for the treatment of hypothyroidism demonstrates the potential of these plants to improve thyroid function and alleviate related symptoms. to effectively utilize the native plant flora of iran, further research and medical consultation are necessary to integrate them as complementary therapies alongside standard treatments.
